REGHY HUD Backup
A personal backup tool that encrypts data on its owner's computer and keeps the encrypted copies in the owner's own Google Drive.
What it does
REGHY HUD Backup is a command-line tool that runs on one personal computer and is used by one person: its owner. It protects the owner's self-hosted workspace (configuration files, databases and notes) against disk failure or loss of the computer.
- Encrypts locally. Each backup set is compressed and encrypted on the owner's computer with the owner's own OpenPGP public key before it leaves the machine. The computer does not hold the private key needed to decrypt it; that key is kept offline by the owner.
- Uploads to the owner's Google Drive. The encrypted files are uploaded to a dedicated folder in the owner's own Google Drive account.
- Checks and rotates. The tool checks that the uploaded files are complete (by comparing checksums), keeps a limited number of recent sets, and deletes older sets that it created itself.
- Restores on demand. When the owner needs to recover, the tool downloads a set it created, and the owner decrypts it with the offline key.
How it uses Google Drive
- It requests only the
drive.filepermission ("See, edit, create, and delete only the specific Google Drive files you use with this app"). It cannot see or change any other file in the account. - All backed-up content is encrypted before upload. Next to it, the tool stores a few small unencrypted files that are needed to check and recover a backup: a manifest and checksum list (dates, component names, file sizes, checksums, the computer's name and the public key fingerprint), a completion marker, and a copy of the tool and its recovery instructions. These files contain no backed-up content.
- It also reads the account's storage usage, so that backups stay within a fixed space budget.
- It has no servers of its own. Data goes directly from the owner's computer to the owner's Google Drive, and is not sent to or shared with anyone else.
Who can use it
REGHY HUD Backup is a private, non-commercial tool. It is not offered as a service to the public, and it is used only with the owner's own Google account.
